I was reading the Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, and it was during the build up to the final battle at Gettysburg that he has Longstreet replying to a follow soldier question of when do you play an inside poker straight. And Longstreet’s answer was simply, never. Never, yes never. I would agree. Statically speaking it’s a very bad play. The chances of you getting that inside card are around 17%, about half as good as trying to catch the outside straight. This is simple mathematics you have two cards you are chasing (ok, not always, you could be hoping for the 1-2-3-4 and you need the 5, or 10-Jack-Queen-King and you need the 9) as apposed to one. Someone hunting for a flush in poker has even better odds than someone hunting for an outside straight. Take my word for it, just drop them, and especially drop them if you have stayed for the flop. This doesn't just apply to hold um either, it applies to all flavors of poker.
